Turo vs. Private Rentals: When Should You Add Direct Bookings?
The question isn't "Turo or private rentals" β for most hosts, it's eventually both. The real question is timing: when does adding a direct-booking channel actually make sense, instead of just adding complexity you're not ready for?
Signs you're ready
- Your marketplace operations are already running smoothly β consistent utilization, low chaos, a real process for turnovers.
- You have repeat guests or local demand you could plausibly capture directly, not just hypothetical interest.
- You've done the homework on insurance, a rental agreement, and renter verification β this isn't something to improvise after your first direct booking.
- You have the bandwidth to run a second channel without your marketplace operations suffering.
Signs it's premature
If you're still stabilizing basic operations on the marketplace, or you haven't looked seriously at private-rental insurance requirements yet, direct bookings will add stress faster than they add revenue. This isn't a race β there's no penalty for adding it a few months later once the foundation is solid.
The realistic upside
Direct bookings mean no marketplace fee on that specific trip and full control over the guest relationship. That's genuinely valuable β but it comes with real new responsibilities you were previously outsourcing to the marketplace: screening, contracts, and support.
Add it when it's additive, not when it's a scramble. The marketplace got you here; direct bookings are the next stage, not an escape hatch.
