Half a fleet unlisted at once
Last lesson’s rule: argue with evidence, never with emotion. Now, September 2026. Turo’s new maintenance rule kicks in, and one host with sixteen cars watches half the fleet get unlisted at once. The host reports monthly revenue dropping from over $10,000 to about $6,000.
Maintenance isn’t just a cost. It’s what keeps your car allowed to work. So here’s Turo’s checklist, the schedule hosts use, and the bill that surprises everyone.
Turo’s maintenance checklist
Tires need at least four thirty-seconds of an inch of tread, and they have to be under six years old. Brake pads need at least three millimeters. No warning lights on the dash. And the A/C and heat have to work.
The full list goes further: the battery, horn, belts, mirrors, lights and windshield chips are on it too. Read it once on Turo’s Quality standards page, then check the big five on every car.
| Tire tread | at least 4/32" |
| Tire age | under 6 years |
| Brake pads | at least 3 mm |
| Dashboard | no warning lights |
| A/C and heat | working |
What failing it costs
Fail it on a trip, and it costs you. If a guest’s car is towed for maintenance or wear, Turo charges you $350, plus $100. To relist, you need an in-person inspection, signed by a shop.
Turo also tracks your maintenance rate over your last ten trips. It has to stay above 50%, and above 60% from January 4, 2027. Trips with no rating count against it, just like the 5-star rate in lesson 4.1.
And when a recall notice arrives, take the car off Turo within 72 hours. A trip with an open recall can void your protection, and cancelling a trip for a recall carries no penalty.
The schedule hosts use
Turo doesn’t set an oil interval. Hosts with economy fleets report changing the oil every 5,000 miles at the latest, checking the brakes at every oil change, and recharging the A/C before summer.
The bill that surprises everyone: tires
In one real Austin fleet, every maintenance receipt logged this summer was for tires. A full set ran $400 to $620, plus the cost to fit them.
| 4 tires | $416 |
| 4 tires | $619 |
| Tire install | $70 |
| Tire service | $134 |
Your call: seven-year-old tires
The Tucson’s tires have plenty of tread, but they’re seven years old. Should Sam rent it this weekend?
No. Tires over six years fail Turo’s checklist, and Turo won’t pay for damage to them either. New tires first.
Maintained cars stay listed
That same Austin fleet keeps a 2018 Lincoln busy: twenty trips last quarter, at eight years old. Maintained cars stay listed, and keep earning.
RevHostHQ’s Service board shows what each car is due for, worst first, and which car can’t go out. Connect a Bouncie or a Tesla, and fault codes and a weak battery show up before a guest finds them.
